“Orange Book” Security Levels

To provide criteria for building and evaluating secure computer systems, in 1985 the U.S. Department of Defense issued the “rainbow series” of documents.
The Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria (TCSEC or “Orange Book”) describes secure OS features.
The criteria include both security features and security assurances.
